of the Mind.
The Mind House
Graphic Design BFA - Thesis
With this project I set out showcase one particular skill above all others: using visual language to communicate complex ideas very simply. Using Adobe Fresco, InDesign, and Illustrator I wrote and illustrated a book that explores the intricate functions of the brain. Then, I expanded upon that to create a website, merch, promotional material, etc. to imagine what this project would look like as a fully formed product available today.
Since each of the 12 characters represents a unique function on the mind, each character had to be given unique characteristics and personality, with little to no confustion between any particular two. I solved this problem by creating 12 icons and assigning each one a unique color. Usually in design you want to keep the number colors you use to a minimum, 4 or 5 at most. But since I was trying to balance 12 I felt using a pastel palatte not only made the design more approachable, but served to unify all the characters in a way that kept them distinct.
When it came to designing the characters, I was inspired by old cartoon & educational programs like School House Rock and Little Miss Sunshine. My Focus was on making them simple, yet expressive, letting their personalities show through their body language and facial expressions.
